These pale, white freshwater amphipods do very well in captivity. They are likely Hyalella azteca, the commonest North American species (see Wikipedia link here).
They feed on organic detritus. We keep them in a seasoned tank with leaflitter and associated microfauna (diluted pondwater) and supplement the tank with cichlid fish food pellets.
10 specimens of mixed size are offered for $13. This species does not exceed 1/3 of an inch.
We replace evaporated water with distilled water, to a waterline of a few inches. We don’t discourage you from using murky pond water, if available, as a supplement to the ecology of your tank.
