Description
Phidippus tux is the Desert Ghost Jumping Spider. These range from Southeastern Arizona down to the Lake Chapala area of Mexico. They are the color of sand and hide in plain sight, making them the ghosts of the pet jumping spider hobby where many wonder whether they even really exist.
Update 10/14/26: captive-bred babies are out of the sac and we want to see them molt a few times before we offer them out (mayyybe by Christmas?). They are currently feeding well on D. melanogaster fruit flies. Some of you don’t need to be encouraged to get on the waiting list for these little beauts!
We’ll upload more photos in the coming weeks. Immatures are a limoncello base color, with black markings out near the tip of the abdomen. As the spiderlings get a little larger, a bright orange spot often develops on the abdomen, anterior to the black markings. Within the two black marks, there are white spots. Adults range from white to tan, but are usually shades of beige to peach. Adult females are typically one base color with faint white striping on the sides of the abdomen. Adult males are spectacular looking with a very distinctive thick, black U-shape on their abdomens. Immatures and adults have a dark band across the four anterior (front) eyes. They’re always wearing shades under the hot, desert sun! 😎
