Description
Phidippus kastoni is a California jumping spider species. They remind us a lot of Phidippus tyrrelli and others in the “insignarius group,” but they are in the “mystaceus group.”
Update 12/31: Multiple females have dropped eggs sacs for us in the past few days. We expect babies to come in late January and then the spiderlings will need to molt a couple times, feeding on fruit flies, to achieve a size that is safer for us to ship them as very stable young spiders. Please get on the waiting list if you’d like to be notified of their being listed as available!
The adult female abdomen tends to have a base color of red to orange, with mottled but identifiable patterns consisting of black, which and sometimes gray patternings. Legs tend to be gray with distinctive black stripes.
Adult males tend to have a bright red abdomen and a black cephalothorax, a coloration not uncommon for male jumping spiders. Their legs are black with distinctive white bands that run up and down them.
