Description
Bombardier beetles are scavengers that will leave each other alone if they have hiding places and other foods to nibble on. These ground beetles measure about 1/3 of in inch in length, on average. Colors range from grayish blue to greenish blue and the beetles have red-orange heads.
Offered as a 5 pack of adult beetles for $12.
These beetles are famously explosive, hence the name, if you touch them (which we do not recommend as it stresses them out and uses up a biologically expensive defense mechanism). This is not recommended as a pet for children who may bring the beetles close to their eyes, nose or throat. The liquid discharge is not dangerous to people with normal skin reactions to chemicals but it’s buyer beware with these. Read more about them at Wikipedia.
In addition to dead insects, we often offer them fish food pellets or other dried pet foods (like dog or cat food). In a planted tank they seem to find food to eat and will also work as clean up crews to a degree as they eat fungus gnat larvae, pupae and eggs. We do recommend a moist substrate with something for them to hide under, like bark or leaves. These are ideal organisms for a paludarium tanks.

They arrived safe and sound.They are active and tend to be camera and light shy. I highly recommend the FEDEX overnight. You get what you pay for. Alive and kicking. They’ve acclimated to their ten gallon tank quite well. They love dying dead wax worms. I’ve also given them some tuna and dried dog kibble under leaf litter along with wax worms. Breeding may be a challenge because their larvae tend to parasitize and scavenge insect pupae. Thank you again Pete for offering some rarities. I’ll be back soon for sure.
