Ship of the Desert Beetle

Description

This species is new to the hobby and destined for greatness. The Ship of the Desert Beetle is not only boat shaped but their elytra are fused to prevent their drying out. Best of all, their semi-gloss black elytra have a very unusual, wrinkled appearance. Not counting legs, they have a body length of about 3/4 of an inch. They tend not to play dead but right themselves very quickly if overturned.

Like other darkling beetles these tolerate room temperature but will be more active if kept warmer. They nibble on a variety of organic matter. Most people find dog or cat good convenient, as well as bits of fruits or vegetables. I like the convenience and non-spoiling aspects of beetle jellies for them which also helps to hydrate them if you run your tank on the dry side (which does reflect their natural habitat).
