Description

These look like a cross between a piece of grass, a mantis and a stick-insect. Ranatra quadridentata are predatory and rely on their resemblance to aquatic weeds to ambush small, live prey.

They are venomous and the bites can be a bit painful as they use their venom to immobilize their prey and then, like giant water bugs, this also helps to break down the internal tissues for them to drink up through their rostrum (see video below).

They do fine in any kind of fresh water, but require a floating platform like a stick or piece of floating bark to hold onto. They breathe through the tip of their abdomens and will hold onto the platform to make this easier.

All specimens appear to be adults and are about 3 to 4 inches long. $8 each. Live guarantee is only in effect if you choose overnight shipping although they are usually just fine with 2 day shipping when temps are under 83 degrees at destination (read terms of service page).

The aquarium should have some vegetation, ideally, but it isn’t necessary. They just like a structure of some kind to perch on. They will generally rest on this with the tip of their abdomen just barely rising through the surface of the water, for air. If it is lower, they will occasionally rise for air or find another less than perfect place to hang out against the glass wall of the tank, etc.
Prey must be small, and preferably moving. You can actually freeze prey and attempt to tong feed them with thawed foods, but moving prey is best and this can include other aquatics, crickets, roaches, flies, etc.
