This product includes one adult individual from each of three different species of desert beetles (you get 3 small beetles for $8). We make no guarantee or attempt to identify the beetles in this group of three, sorry. We only guarantee that they will be different from each other. Bugguide suggests that there are 1200 species of tenebs in the US and Canada.

The word nano in this context is a reference to small tanks and the organisms that live in them. The beetles offered through this listing measure no greater than around 1 centimeter.

The word teneb is a reference to beetles in the family tenebrionidae. We loosely call these desert beetles and the ones we offer are all communal (can live together and eat the same foods) and come from dry habitats, although a little moisture in part of the substrate now and then is recommended if ventilation is high, and in addition to hydrating foods like fruit or veg.

All three beetle species you will receive can be kept in the same tank and will thrive in the same habitat conditions. The more beetles and the more variety that you have, the more interesting the tank is. A ten-gallon tank could easily house 50 normal-sized tenebs. These enjoy a drier tank than most pet bugs. Sand is a great substrate though other types are okay too and a mix is, perhaps, best. Take care not to allow the substrate to remain wet for too long as the feet of these beetles can get caked up with moist dirt.

These three beetles live well together on dried pet food (see related products below) and occasional bits of fruit, carrot, etc. Tenebs are easy to care for and very active. If you have a metal screen on the top of your cage, consider adding a heat lamp to the top and leaving it on for 8 to 12 hours per day. This will activate the beetles, particularly in the evening hours. Even after the light goes off the beetles will be very active into the night.
