The Scolopendra polymorpha desert tiger centipede is a great beginner’s species. The colors on this widespread southwest species vary. They like a slightly moist substrate despite being a desert species. These are venomous but not considered more painful than a bee sting. They are very fast and move erratically. Not a good pet for small children if they have curious hands. They grow to an average of 4 inches although larger specimens are not too uncommon. Some people have claimed to see 8 inch ones, but that likely includes the terminal legs and antennae.
Current specimens measure around 2 to 3 inches.
