This kit comes in two DIFFERENT forms. One is highly functional and this is the one I recommend. The other may look prettier but isn’t as good for isopods as the lid is highly ventilated and dryness is the #1 killer of pet isopods.

Option #1: The Functional Cage $34.99

Includes the following as pictured (1st, 2nd and 3rd photos):

• Clear plastic shoebox container–It measures 13 5/8 X 8 1/4 X 4 7/8 inches, and with a good sealing white lid. Enough air transfer happens between the lid and container that you never need to punch holes in it. This is the ideal lid for a isopod habitat. As the seal isn’t airtight, all those delicious oxygen atoms pass right into the container. Meanwhile the humidity in the substrate is less likely to evaporate for at least a month. In this way you really don’t have to do ANYTHING for a month or more if your using the correct substrate. And on that note…
• Substrate: this kit comes with my custom blended “isopod substrate”. This is enough to fill the bottom of the container an inch or so and this provides enough depth and a sufficient substrate to airspace ratio (prevents the tank from getting too dry). Always keep it slightly moist. This substrate is designed to be a complete food source, though I do recommend a little bit of supplementation with the various foods recommended in my Pet Isopod Care Sheet.
• Cork bark hide–This is a flat slab of cork bark, a popular product in pet bug tanks. The bottom side is slightly concave and this provides a perfect shelter for your pet pill and sow bugs. It also makes it a little easier to find them when you go to look for them.

Option #2: The Display Cage $34.99

Includes the following products as pictured (4th photo only):

• Rectangular Kritter Keeper–This is a standard pet store type of cage offering. It measures 9 X 5.5 X 5 inches high. I consider them to be inferior to the Option #1 cage that I offer, above, but they are arguably prettier and better for display of specimens.
• Composite blend substrate–This substrate is designed to be a complete food source, though I do recommend a little bit of supplementation with the various foods recommended in my Pet Isopod Care Sheet. Always keep the substrate moderately moist as this is your one buffer against the isopods drying out.
• Cork bark hide–This is a flat slab of cork bark, a popular product in pet bug tanks. The bottom side is slightly concave and this provides a perfect shelter for your pet pill and sow bugs. It also makes it a little easier to find them when you go to look for them.

Each Complete Isopod Habitat Kit comes with a cage option, the right substrate and a hide (cork bark). This product combination is everything you need to successfully raise isopods.
