Rugose Stag Beetle

Description

Sinodendron rugosum is an unusual stag beetle. Rather than having pincer-like mandibles, the male looks more like a rhino beetle while the female lacks the horn. Collected this one in my backyard on 5/31/16. No guarantee on lifespan, but it should live through the summer I’d guess, if not longer. It should feed on apple or sugary liquids like other stag beetles. They measure around 3/4 of an inch, but definitely look like cute little cartoon beetles.
