Description
These blue dream shrimp are one of the easiest arthropods I’ve ever kept. It helps of course that I keep them in a planted freshwater tank that I set up for aquatic insects and their needs are very similar to my other aquatic pets.
Sold in 5 packs for $18.99, these things bred like crazy and even though I’m not much of a shrimp guy, I’m suddenly leaning into pet shrimp a little bit.
I’m not entirely sure they are “blue dream shrimp,” but that’s what they were sold to me as, originally, and they breed true to blue and with the same consistent depth of blue. If so, their species is Neocaradina davidi. They are very prolific in the tank, but I do have quite a bit for them to eat in there. Mainly it seems they eat bits of algae, but I’m guessing they are picking up tiny little pieces of various other detritus in the tank too. They practically run to little fish food pellets we drop in for them and their tankmates.
I have kept them with a variety of other aquatic insects, including diving beetles, and don’t see any predation, although I’m guessing it would be a mistake to keep them with predatory hemiptera like giant water bugs, ferocious water bugs, and water scorpions.
