Description

Trichoton sordidum is offered here to the teneb hobby for the second year in a row.

They are small at around 1 cm but have an interesting morphology, making them distinctive against our other family tenebrionidae offerings.

Priced to tempt you at $2 each. Limit 4 per customer due to it being early in the season (as of 2/27/25).

They are a nice addition to communal desert beetle tank and lend an element of diversity with their smaller size. See photos at Bugguide.net.

They feed well on little bits of fruit or vegetable. We feed them primarily with fish food pellets. They’ll also scavenge other dead insects and just generally eat the same fare as what you feed your other desert beetles.

Check out one of the reviews below. They are fairly easy to reproduce in captivity, whether you are even really trying!

I ordered one from Peter and it came in perfect condition! Don’t let their small size fool you, for these tiny beetles have huge appetites! They will sit on their food, ignoring the much larger desert beetles trying to get a bite. Definitely a cute little addition to any teneb tank.

Regarding durability, I bought 3 of these fellas in April. They live on the same diet as the rest of my desert beetles. I have no organic matter in my substrate and very little moisture. It’s just coarse sand and a light spray of one corner twice a week or so. Well I have at least 5 of them now. They seem to have successfully bred and pupated in conditions that have prevented all my other species from pupating.

Big thumbs up on these guys! They’re so tiny and cute that I truly do not mind a few new additions to the family.

Easily the highest-energy inhabitant of the desert beetle tank! Our turbo-powered Skjaldmær runs circles around the next runner-up (the micro wooly darkling beetle) and attacks carrot dice with an endearing gusto to make up for calories burned. She’s tiny, but her level activity makes her extremely visible nevertheless.
