Boat-backed Darkling Beetle (Embaphion muricatum)

This is one of 1400 different species of Darkling Beetles (Tenebrionidae) in the US.  They are found in arid and desert-like areas of the country, wandering about during the cooler nights.  I collected this specimen at the lodge in Madera Canyon in late August, 2001.
